Dampness, condensation, and mould are three common issues in homes across the UK. If you’ve ever spent days or weeks trying to dry out your living space and bring in the fresh air, you aren’t alone.
The problem is that mold spores are extremely resilient. You can spend your entire summer holiday cleaning, scrubbing, and paying an enormous energy bill. But the moment even the slightest amount of condensation begins to linger, all your hard work is undone.
Deciding not to run the AC or dehumidifier for just a day is enough for condensation and mould to take root once more. Since PIV units run automatically and are so cost-effective, you won’t have this problem after your unit is installed.
Imagine not having to micromanage your home’s climate anymore. With a PIV unit, you don’t have to leave your windows open at inopportune times or worry about where your furniture is placed. Even with an AC or dehumidifier, you’re not supposed to place furniture directly against walls. Doing so is a common cause of mold problems.
But once your PIV unit is installed, you can open or close the windows anytime you like. You can dry your clothes indoors and put the kettle on while you wait. You can live life as you please without any fear of condensation or mold growth.
In addition to saving you time and money, Positive Input Ventilation offers a slew of health benefits. Dampness and mold pose a serious threat to anyone’s health, regardless of whether or not they have asthma.
People with asthma and allergies are indeed more sensitive to air quality than people without. But mould and dirty air can wreak havoc on your body, even if you’re in tip-top shape. Chronic sinus infections, brain fog, and shortness of breath have all been reported by people living in damp or high-condensation homes.
Adding a PIV unit to your living space is literally a breath of fresh air. While symptoms related to mould and dampness do vary from person to person, you’re likely to notice reduced fatigue and clearer sinuses once your unit is up and running.
If you or a loved one does suffer from allergies or asthma, the health benefits should be even more noticeable. Having a constant flow of filtered, fresh, clean air into your home reduces the presence of dust mites, air pollutants, and allergens.
In short, the biggest irritants for those with asthma or allergies are filtered out by your PIV unit. You’ll truly be able to breathe easy whenever you’re at home, regardless of the weather or season.
Keep in mind that PIV units ventilate your entire property while staying quieter than dehumidifiers, exhaust fans, and air conditioners.
Odds are, you’re all too familiar with the cacophony that often comes with ventilation. Even when a bathroom exhaust fan is marketed as “whisper-quiet,” it sounds like a gas-powered lawnmower. You’re stuck choosing between loud and distracting noise or a bathroom that never really dries out.
Dehumidifiers aren’t much better. The most powerful models still make huge amounts of noise when they suck in air, making it almost impossible to get a good night’s sleep. And they’re so finicky, too. Simply being too close to the wall is enough to make a dehumidifier exponentially louder, among many other possible causes.
The worst part is none of these other devices can ventilate your entire property. You need several. When you’ve got fans, the air conditioner, and dehumidifiers running throughout the house, it’s like being inside of a beehive. With a PIV unit, your entire property stays dry and ventilated without any noise pollution.
Even if you get a great price on a dehumidifier or air conditioner, you won’t save much money. From the moment you whack the AC on, your energy bill begins to skyrocket. The energy price cap increase in April 2022 isn’t helping, either.
Your AC unit costs about £3 a day if you run it for a total of 9 hours. But as temperatures climb, you’ll find that 9 hours isn’t enough to keep your home cool. 12 hours would cost you about £4 per day, depending on your exact brand and model.
You don’t have much control over when to run your dehumidifier. Most have an automatic sensor and run for most of the day. With this in mind, you’ll spend an average of £2 per unit per day. Many homes need 2 or more units to effectively remove odors and mould, which is bad news for your energy bill.
Even better, today’s PIV units are equipped with automatic sensors and timers. You won’t have to fret over which times of day you should switch it on, and you’ll spend a fraction of what you would on AC or dehumidifiers.

Positive Input Ventilation is a great option for almost all homes in the greater Bournemouth area. Our climate practically makes it a must-have for any living space. Let’s take an in-depth look at the biggest benefits of PIV.
“I got a PIV installed by Friendly Waste, since then my Home air feels very clean, I am very happy with it, I would defiantly recommend to with breathing problems”
Jefferey Donald Salisbury
“I needed a positive ventilation for my loft space as my roof was sweating due to the spray foam i had installed. Since being installed my loft space can breath again”
Shane Newton Bournemouth
Positive Input Ventilation is a home ventilation system designed to remove condensation, mould growth, and dampness across your home.
The idea behind PIV is simple but brilliant: it creates ventilation throughout your entire living space with a clever, low-profile system of vents and fans.
The easiest way to explain what sets PIV apart from other options is by looking at its opposite, Mechanical Ventilation with a Heat Recovery system (or MVHR). MVHR serves the same purpose as PIV but requires ducting to be installed throughout your entire home.
The MVHR then connects to the ducts and starts moving air around your home. The ducting must be airtight, as does your house. Any air leaks or gaps reduce the effectiveness of MVHR, making it a poor choice for older buildings.
Positive Input Ventilation is just the opposite. No ducting has to run through your walls, plus PIV takes advantage of any gaps or air leaks in your home. You don’t have to do messy, expensive remodelling to enjoy the benefits of PIV. It leverages your home’s current design, using gaps to move air around and keep humidity from causing mold or dampness.
Also known as “positive pressure ventilation,” PIV ventilates your entire living space by drawing in fresh outside air, filtering it, and pushing it into your home. The fresh air forces out damp, stale, or humid air through the aforementioned gaps in your property.
Typically, PIV units are installed in your loft or attic. Then, a vent or diffuser is installed in the ceiling of the room below your PIV. This creates positive pressure in your home as the stale air is constantly freshened and replaced.
The result is healthier indoor air quality, thanks to removing humidity, odours, and ideal mould growth conditions.
But don’t fret if you’re lacking a loft or attic. It’s just as effective to install your Positive Input Ventilation unit in a location that draws air straight from your home’s exterior. At Albay Homes, we install several different types of PIV units. We’ll help you determine the most effective and affordable option for your unique situation.
On average, it takes a week or less for PIV to work and make a noticeable difference. The exact timing depends on your specific circumstances, like the size of your space, installation location, and severity of your condensation issues.
Once installed and running, a Positive Input Ventilation unit typically replaces all the air in your home several times daily. The only exception to this is extremely hot weather. On the warmest days, your unit will only draw in exterior air at night to keep your home from heating up.
But even if we install your PIV unit at the peak of humidity, you’ll still notice results within about one week or less. It’s an extremely affordable, efficient, and convenient way to make your house more hospitable year-round.
Your PIV unit can make the house cold if you run it in the winter. Because positive input ventilation works by pulling air from outside, the temperature in your home may be impacted.
But you still have no reason to sweat. Most PIV units come with heating functions to warm the chilly winter air. In summer, the heater automatically shuts off to avoid drawing in hot air. Then your PIV will run at night when the air is cooler.
All of that said, most people report a huge change in their home’s climate once the PIV unit gets to work. You’d be surprised how comfortable your home can feel when you’re not battling dampness and humidity simultaneously.
In a nutshell, your PIV unit won’t turn your home into an arctic tundra during any season. But nothing works better for removing mildew, mould, damp odours, and condensation than Positive Input Ventilation.
For most homes in Bournemouth and the UK in general, a PIV system is absolutely worth it. The period homes commonly found here weren’t built with any kind of anti-dampness materials. As our climate has gotten warmer and damper over the years, this has become a huge problem for residents everywhere.
Installing an air conditioning unit or dehumidifier is expensive, and sometimes impossible depending on the age of your home. Spending £120 per month on these systems just isn’t a sustainable option for most people.
But a PIV unit will only cost you about £1 or £2 per month, and you don’t have to micromanage which times of the day you use it. Considering the comfort, convenience, and health benefits you’ll enjoy, Positive Input Ventilation is one of the best home investments you can make.
It’s widely known that damp environments and mould are downright bad for your health. Sensitive groups like babies, children, and the elderly have an even higher risk of health complications like respiratory issues.
But thanks to our climate in Bournemouth, many residents find themselves waging war against condensation. Your first thought might be to shell out for your trusty dehumidifier or air conditioning unit, but these old-school options are no match for the extreme climate we deal with today.
That’s why here at Friendly Waste, we offer positive input ventilation services to folks across Bournemouth and beyond. Not located in Bournemouth? We’ll travel up to 150 miles from our base of operations to complete your project.
